Arkansas: Brain Injury Types
A hypoxic brain injury occurs when the amount of oxygen that reaches the brain is severely reduced. This differs from an anoxic injury where no oxygen reaches the brain; however, a hypoxic brain injury is just as serious.
In mild cases, hypoxic brain injuries cause inattentiveness, memory loss and uncoordinated movement. In more severe cases, these injuries can result in a coma, in which brain stem reflexes stop. If the coma persists, death can occur.
Causes of hypoxic brain injuries in Arkansas include:
- Drowning
- Shock
- Asphyxiation
- Carbon monoxide poisoning
- Heart attack
- Respiratory paralysis
- Birth injuries
Prognosis depends on the extent of the injury and time spent in a coma. Those who recover are only unconscious briefly, while those who stay in comas are less likely to recover.
